Sights To See While You’re In London, England

Posted on timeAugust 4th, 2010 by userMonica     flagComments Off

I was able to take a trip to London, United Kingdom when I was 16 years old. I wish there was some way I could convey to you how truly awesome it was. Fortunately, I had a camera and some money with me, and was able to leave with some great memories, photos, and souvenirs. Although I had to deal with finding a missing passport and going through tons of electrical adapters trying to find the right one, I left London not only vastly inspired, but also armed with some of the most amazing experiences I have ever experienced.

One of my favorite locations was the Tower of London. I spent a whole day reading about it’s history and seeing first hand what it was like. Probably most well known as a royal prison and place of torture, the Tower of London also served many other uses, from menagerie to stellar observatory. One of the most interesting parts of the Tower of London was seeing it’s famous ravens. The ravens that walk around the Tower have been occupants there for generations. A very old superstition keeps them there, one that says if the ravens leave, the kingdom will fall. The ravens have some of the most royal treatment of the Tower’s inhabitants, with their own personal handler and living quarters.

Big Ben is probably one of the most recognizable monuments in London. As the third largest clock tower in the world, this huge and incredibly beautiful tower is even more breathtaking in real life. It is readily apparent why Big Ben has been represented for generations in films, TV, and books. Standing at the base of the clock tower is a really neat experience. I’ll be the first to admit that I’d rather not get into inner-workings of the government, getting to visit Parliament was really pretty inspiring. Getting to see first-hand how the government of London runs taught me a lot, and I left feeling happy that I decided to go.

Alright, I had to get my picture taken with the famous solemn-faced guards. Even though it’s pretty cliche, I just had to do it. I didn’t try to make him laugh or stick my finger up his nose or anything, as they are armed guards I’ll have you know, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stand next to one and have my picture taken. I was surprised how many locations boasted a Changing of the Guards, including the Tower of London. The gardens and parks of London are definitely worth mentioning. As a completely free way to spend your day, I really recommend going. Swans and ducks swim in the ponds surrounded by beautiful banks of flowers in every color. Walking anywhere is very special when you get to walk through the parks.

Being a woman, I of course have to mention the London shopping. I visited Camden Market was blown away by the selection. From designer bags to fishnets, Camden Market has something for absolutely everyone. So get a little bit of money, your passport, and your good walking shoes, and get ready to walk away with bags and bags of stuff.

London holds something exciting for everyone in your family. I walked away from the week-long London trip with some amazing memories, and I still dream of getting to go back there someday. If you’ve never been to London, I very highly recommend it. I promise it’s even worth having to locate that missing passport.

There’s Something For Any Age To Appreciate In The City Of London

Posted on timeMay 27th, 2010 by userMonica     flagComments Off

London is the best. I went at the ripe young age of 16, but the memories will never leave me. The pictures, souvenirs, and memories that I acquired in London have left me figuring out how to get back there. Although I spent quite a long time trying to locate my missing passport, finding adapters, and packing my bags, it was ultimately so worth it. If you love art, history, and culture as I do, a trip to London has to make its way onto your to-do list.

The Tower of London is a popular British Landmark located in London. Probably most well-known as a place or torture and a royal prison, the Tower of London holds centuries of history that are made available to you and your family when you visit. I spent an entire day walking around learning all the stories and seeing for myself just how the Tower worked. Probably my favorite part was seeing the ravens. These huge black birds strut around the lawn, eyeing? visitors with their black eyes. The ravens have been residents of the Tower for generations, as a superstition states that if they ever left, the kingdom would fall. In respect of this superstition, the ravens have their very own living quarters and their own personal handler.

Everyone knows Big Ben as one of the most iconic monuments for London. Movies, stories, and art have been representing Big Ben for many, many years, and seeing it for yourself will show you why. I also recommend that you visit Parliament. This is where laws, bills, and other legislation takes place for the government of The City Of London. I’ve really never been interested in the workings of government, but seeing it in action is pretty inspiring. Getting to see the “behind the scenes” government action was really special, and it amazed me how accessible it was.

As cliche as it is, I had to see the Changing of the Guards. Although I didn’t try to make him laugh or kiss him or anything, they are armed after all, but I did get my picture taken. But who knows? If I go back, maybe I will end up kissing one. Many different locations have a Changing of the Guards, and I recommend seeing one for yourself if you are in any of these locations. The plethora of gardens and parks located in London is unbelievable. Huge plots of flowers of every color roll on the landscape, surrounded by swans and beautiful artistic sculptures. Since it is free, and since it makes walking anywhere amazing, I definitely recommend going.

London shopping is unlike any other. All you need is a purse with plenty of money, and don’t forget your passport, and you are set. Camden market is any teenager’s shopping heaven, and some of my favorite souvenirs were purchased there. From classy boutiques to a punk rocker’s paradise, there is something for absolutely everyone, and it is almost impossible not to be walking away with armloads of stuff.

London holds something exciting for everyone in your family. I walked away from the week-long London trip with some amazing memories, and I still dream of getting to go back there someday. If you’ve never been to London, I very highly recommend it. I promise it’s even worth having to locate that missing passport.

The ‘Staycation’ Is Set For Another Great Year In The UK

Posted on timeApril 7th, 2010 by userMonica     flagComments Off

Spring has sprung and Summer is just around the corner so many British families are putting together their holiday plans for this year. 2009 saw the rise of the ‘staycation’ in the UK with many families choosing to go on more traditional holidays at home rather than abroad. Seaside resorts reported an increase in visitors and UK tourism saw an increase despite the down turn in the economy. Initially the great British ’staycation’ resulted in many people staying at home and travelling to local tourist attractions but soon people started looking for different types of affordable accommodation.

Short weekend breaks became very popular with people staying in hotels and serviced apartments. The majority of these travellers were couples and groups of friends out to enjoy the sights and sounds of big cities such as Bristol. There are plenty of places to stay in Bristol that meet the needs of younger people but many families wanted something a bit different when it came to a holiday.

There were two family accommodation trends that became obvious in 2009 and this is mainly a case of budget. Those that had mobile homes or caravans decided to stay in campsites, which is particularly popular in the South of England. Renting holiday cottages was the trend that appeared among those that had a greater budget to spend on their holiday.

Some of the most popular holiday cottages in the UK can be found in the southern counties of England. These are usually in areas like Cornwall, Devon and Hampshire. This is likely to be down to the wealth of local attractions in these regions. Hampshire has the New Forest, Devon has Exeter and Dartmouth, while Cornwall has become known as the surfers paradise.

Many of the popular holiday cottage rental agents reported that last year cottages in Cornwall saw a dramatic increase in the number of rented properties. The rise in popularity of Cornwall holiday cottages can largely be attributed to the number of young people visiting the region after finishing their exams. This is because areas like Newquay cater for younger people with the wide range of extreme sports and night life available to them.

Another destination that is very popular is the New Forest in Hampshire. It is thought that holiday cottages in the New Forest saw an increase in families visiting the area. The appeal of the New Forest is likely to be because of the wide variety of outdoor activities, wildlife and beautiful scenery it has to offer. The location is also close enough to a number of interesting destinations that are easy to visit by car. A short car journey will allow you to visit the beaches of Bournemouth or the medieval city of Salisbury.

All the signs are showing that 2010 is likely to be another successful year for the UK tourism industry. The state of the economy has improved slightly but times are still tough with many people still tightening their belts and with potential strike action from some airlines the thought of going abroad this year is looking uncertain for many. All of these signs point towards another success story for UK tourism and the continued rise of the UK ’staycation’ in 2010.

Egypt Summer Holidays

Posted on timeDecember 7th, 2009 by userMonica     flagComments Off

Considering Egypt as a holiday destination, we had to desert – or maybe grow beyond – our old style ideas about Cleopatra’s area. After all , is it wrong that the majority of europeans and American recall their grammar college introductions to Egypt and picture pyramids, the Sphinx, hieroglyphics, and stately craft plying the Nile brook. While archaeologists continue excavating valuable Egyptian antiquities, Egypt has a great amount more to supply tourists than traditional heaps of well placed stones. These are our top picks for Egypt away from the common pyramid tours.

Sharm El Sheikh

In fact, package holidays in Sharm el Sheikh remain one of Britain’s best kept travel techniques. We nearly hate to divulge this previously well guarded info. Among the most developed and most easily accessible resort destinations on the Sinai spur, Sharm el Sheikh has everything a beach resort ought to have : still, at heart, just another sleepy tiny beach town, Sharm el-Shiekh offers every aquatic amusement any one ever could imagine, and it ranks among the world’s absolute best spots for snorkelling and scuba diving. The beaches are good for wind surfing and catamaran sailing ; the light waves are fun for bop boards and surfmats. Although five-star luxury resorts have exploded out of the sand, Sharm el-Shiekh has lots and lots of intimate lodgings. Although the city rocks with decorative nightlife, some people still camp in the desert just beyond the fringe of town. And though golf courses sprawl across lavishly irrigated land, traditional monuments and rugged mountains belie centuries of hard struggle to bring life from grudging land.

Extended stays in Sharm el-Shiekh are splendidly reasonable. With holidays from Britain, holidaymakers may pay as little as ?350 for a week’s stay at a really comfortable and well allocated four star hotels. All of the most favored web travel sites offer really fascinating packages when it comes to this about perfect beach nirvana, and some offer both last minute and all inclusive packages at terribly desirable costs.

Hurghada

Hurghada is a little tourist town near to the Red known for its rich stunning underwater flora & fauna with its warm waters being full of amyriad of ocean species. A substantial number of the hostels in this area run along a single stretch of beach and sport both their own swimming pools as well as private beaches for your privacy. This resort, like Sharm el-Shiekh, offers great water sports.

Alexandria

Aprevious trade centre established by Alexander The Great the traditional, this city is chock-full of belle poque buildings and grand squares. You will not be ready to resist it’s charm no the opportunity to eat some of the amazing French pastries on offer or smoke the sheesha ( water pipe ) in one of the local coffee bars full of heated debates.

If you do visit Alexandria one place you can’t pass up the likelihood to visit is Ar-Ashid ( Rosetta ). This city was made famous by the Rosetta Stone tablet discovered here in 1799 by the French that was the key to decoding the hieroglyphics.

If you are taking an Egypt holiday this year do not forget to book your Birmingham Airport Parking & Birmingham Airport Hotels on the web prior to your flight to find the hottest deal and milk the online discounts available.
